Federal Health Minister Michael Wooldridge calls for ban on all boxing in Australia.28/04/2001 This item was sent to LAUNCESTON SPORT as A SOFCOM NEWS ALERT. Although admitting it would be a controversial move, Dr Wooldridge said he wanted to see all female and male boxing banned by state and territory governments. He has written to the states asking them to do all they can to tighten boxing safety regulations, and proposed that a conference to discuss safety be held. "Boxing is the only sport that manages to combine danger and degradation so well," Dr Wooldridge told the Sunday Telegraph today. "It is a degrading sport and I think that is why perhaps so many people don't like the idea of women boxing. "I would like to see it banned." His call comes after a Queensland fighter died in the ring in Melbourne on April 6, and last week a Perth woman was left in a coma after a bout in New Zealand. NSW has the toughest boxing laws in Australia, and is the only state to have banned competition by women.
