MORE ACCOLADES FOR SYDNEY International Olympic Committee President, Juan Antonio Samaranch presented the IOC Women and Sport 2001 trophy to Australian delegate Kevin Gosper in Switzerland on Thursday ,May 17. Mr Gosper said the award recognizes efforts that increased the profile and representation of women athletes at the Sydney Games. Women competed in modern pentathlon,weightlifting and water polo for the first time,and gained equal representation in a number of other sports. Australia's water polo team took full advantage of the opportunities winning gold after years of campaigning for the right to compete at the olympics. The proportion of female competitors increased from 34% at ATLANTA in 1996 to 39% in Sydney. Apart from elevating Cathy Freeman to centre stage at the opening ceremony,Sydney highlighted female Olympians RAELENE BOYLE BETTY CUTHBERT DAWN FRASER SHIRLEY STRICKLAND SHANE GOULD DEBBIE FLINTOFF - KING in the final lap of the torch relay.
