In 2000 the Walk Against Want raised $960,000 for Community Aid Abroad. The Walk Against Want is now Australia's longest running outdoor fundraising event and occurs in March each year. NOVEMBER 2001 It is with sadness that I enter this item into my diary. November 30 - 11-00 am at the St John's Anglican Church the funeral service for John Baden Lees,The Mayor of Launceston. Relatives and friends have been respectfully invited to attend. John was admitted to the LGH on Wednesday Morning having had a heart attack he passed away on November 26,after a second heart attack.. John was 57 and is survived by his wife Mary,sons Patrick,David and James. A condolence book is available for The Launceston Community and others who have known John ,to sign at the Launceston Town Hall Service Centre. DECEMBER 2001 JANUARY 2002 FEBRUARY 2002 MARCH 23 2002 The Tasmanian Greens 30th birthday. At a public meeting in the Hobart Town Hall on March 23 1972 the United Tasmania Group first began. The late Richard Jones was a founding member of the UTG which later evolved into the TAS GREENS. The UTG was the first Green Political Party in the world They stood candidates in the 1972 election to draw attention to the flooding of Lake Pedder.
