CLEAN UP LAUNCESTON will be making a submission as part of the public consultation which began on Monday March 25 and concludes April 23 2001. The Draft plan aims to guide public and private investment in the central area for the next 20 years and is on display at the Launceston Service Centre or can be downloaded in PDF from Council's website or alternatively click the download link on this page. LAUNCESTON CENTRAL AREA STRATEGY The report is a weighty tome that tends to go over ground already covered by other reports including the Search Conference. For all its words there is still a great deal missing, apparently the Launceston City Council is not hearing the people who are concerned about the facilities on offer in the central area. Just some of the points I wish to talk over with Council, that could generate further business opportunities and create a more livable and attractive city. THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A BUSINESS RECYCLING SCHEME for paper, cardboard and beverage containers This could be operated as a kerbside pick up or from a central point or points. If use of vacant spaces above business premises for residential use takes off there will have to be a full residential recycling service on a par with other areas of the city. PUBLIC PLACE RECYCLING for glass, plastic and metal A GENERAL CLEAN UP OF UGLY POSTERS THAT ARE REGULARLY PASTED ON BUILDINGS,POLES,WINDOWS ,STREET FURNITURE ETC ADDITIONAL POSTER POLES and COMMUNITY ADVERTISING DIRECTORIES to promote smaller Launceston Events and Groups EXTRA LITTER BINS MORE FREQUENT MAINTENANCE OF PAVEMENTS BY TRADERS USING THIS SPACE FOR TRADING MORE FREQUENT BUS SERVICES ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT AND ON SUNDAYS A DEDICATED BUS AND TAXI ZONE IN ST JOHN STREET INFORMATION BOOTHS SHOPPER GUIDES LITTER ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS LITTER CLEAN UP PATROLS A FULL TIME COMMUNITY ARTIST to develop performance art,and visual art This Community Artist could also oversee a video or film art project in conjunction with a website.
