On October 17,1885,Angus and Robertson published Banjo Paterson's Man From Snowy River & Other verses. This is generally regarded as Australia's first best-seller. In 1995,the centenary of the publication was celebrated with a re-enactment in CORRYONG of the ride to catch the colt of Old Regret. Corryong,on the Murray River, surrounded by mountains still evokes the memories of A.B. Paterson's verses. From Corryong in 1 direction are the Alps and Mount Koskiusko and in another is Mount Hotham. The grave of Jack Riley,"The Man From Snowy River" who died in 1914 is in Corryong Cemetery. Other towns have their local heroes who claim to be the inspiration for the story, but Corryong's claim is the favourite. Check weather stats for Corryong and read an extract of Tne Man From Snowy River on MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT. WORLD RIGHTS | |
