LEGACY WEEK SEPTEMBER 2 - 8

Legacy,a movement conceived in Hobart on March 23,1923 continues it's work in the ex-service community throughout Tasmania and in about 50 clubs around Australia.

In the 1950s and 60s Christmas-New Year Camps were held near Coningham Beach for the child dependants of Tasmanians left fatherless after World War 11.

Legacy members aimed to establish self esteem,a sense of purpose and a strong element of hope in these children.

Men or predominantly men gave time for the camps and afterwards assisted weekly after school self-development classes as part of an ongoing guardian watch on the families needs.

Since Legacy began it has changed a lot,but still continues to care for the families of the servicemen who died on active service or subsequently.

Young dependants in it's care are few,but today
includes the children of Vietnam Veterans.

The greater beneficiaries of Legacy today are the widows.
