EARTHDAY was founded
in the USA by GAYLORD NELSON.
Gaylord's objective was to
organize a demonstration of
concern for the environment
so large that it would force
the issue onto America's agenda.
20 million people supported
the 1st EARTHDAY.
A diversity of groups came
together with the realization
that they shared common values.
The 1st EARTHDAY led to the
creation of the U.S.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY.
In 1990 EARTHDAY went global with
200 million people from
141 nations participating.
The enthusiasm has been contagious with
many communities participating annually
to work on projects with an ongoing
benefit to their citizens.
