In a news release,March 1,2001
Tibet's government in exile
argues that awarding the Olympics
to Beijing would be a vote for
human rights abuse.

Giving China the 2008 Olympic Games
constitutes a total lack of sensitivity
and regard for the suffering of millions
of Chinese,Tibetans, Uighurs and Mongolians.

Tibet has backed up it's case with an
exhaustive list of repressive policies in
China, including restrictions on religious
freedom and the freedom of association,
as well as arbitrary executions and the
banning of labour unions.

The final vote by the IOC will be in July

The New York based group
Human Rights in China
reported back in 1995 that
Mr Liu Xiaobo
a leading literary critic
Mr Wang Xizhe
a veteran activist
Mr Huang Xiang
poet and activist
and his wife
Ms Zhang Lin had been arrested.

Another activist
Mr Deng Huanwu was taken from
his home in the city of
Chongqing.

Yet another activist who had
been jailed
Mr Liu Nianchun was reported
to have been banished from the
capital.

Heroes of China

There have been many heroes
of the democracy campaign.

Not all have come to the
attention of the world.

Some who have include;
Mr Xu Liangying,
who at the age of 75 had
drafted a petition for democracy
and was well known throughout
China for translating the
works of Einstein.

Other prominent signatories

Mr Wang Ganchang,one of the
fathers of China's atom bond

Mr Wang Ruoshui,former deputy
editor of the People's Daily

Mr Wang Dan.prominent student
leader of 1989.
