Following the presentation of the
petition for full kerbside recycling
to the Launceston City Council on
World Environment Day 2001 the focus
for the Launceston Recycling Project
shifts to other ways the citizens can
recycle their waste materials.

Establishing a network of public place
recycling depots is a priority for the
Launceston Recycling Project.

A petition for Public Place recycling
is already circulating in the Launceston
community and available for download from

Public Place Recycling can take
different forms it can be a simple
wooden box placed at shopping centres,
hotels,service stations,schools or
community centres so that people
can combine their recycling tasks with
their normal daily activities.

Other methods of
public place
recycling
involve the use of
mobile recycling
stations to be
placed in high traffic
areas at a
pre-advertised time.

Wheelie Bins can
also be utilised at
permanent public place sites

Public Place Recycling differs from
Kerbside in that kerbside is for
residents only and mainly diverts
recyclables from the weekly garbage
collection and has no impact on litter.

Public Place recycling on the other hand
can be used by residents and visitors to the city.
Public Place recycling will reduce landfill as does
kerbside, but it also has an impact on
the amount of litter in our public places as community minded
people
will pick up recyclables and drop them into the bin
if the bins are conveniently placed in all shopping centres.

No matter what method we use recycling will reduce the level of
greenhouse gas emissions and conserve raw materials.
